League Information

WCAA Basketball is one of the largest youth recreational basketball leagues in the State. The program is designed to introduce our youth of all ages to the great game of basketball! Many of our players have never played in an organized basketball league, while others are more experienced.

What makes us different?
WCAA Basketball only allows individual registrations
. No "buddy request" or "coach requests". All players are evaluated by the coaches and drafted to teams each season. This process is an attempt to create a skill balanced league with each team having players of various skill levels and a fun experience for everyone! We run programs year-round, with Spring and Fall offerings.

Welcome and GAME ON!

WE NEED YOU!

One of the biggest issues in youth basketball is finding enough coaches. There are only 7 - 9 players on each team... with 400+ kids... 400 divided by 8, carry the one... okay I'm no mathematician and it changes every season, but MANY coaches are needed.

Now every league has a bunch of experienced coaches who help out every season, but there aren't enough of these veteran coaches to take on EVERY team. So there are always a few left without a coach.

And for those coach-less teams... We usually ask a PARENT to step up and take on the role.

Now, as I'm someone who is always tasked with finding parents who will step up and coach their son or daughter's team, let me tell you something... It's NOT easy finding parents willing to volunteer. Very few parents want to take on the responsibility. Many parents say they're too busy... and that's true for a large percentage of adults. But I will tell you its the best experience you'll ever have with your child and will build a memory they'll have for the rest of their life. What's that worth?

Another common response:

"I don't know enough about basketball to coach." And to that, my reply is: "Who cares!" You see... Many adults believe that you need to be a *basketball wiz* to coach a youth sports team, but that's absolutely NOT the case. Successful youth coaching is more about CHARACTER than basketball IQ. Anyone who's enthusiastic / happy / kind and is willing to give every kid a chance can be a great youth coach who kids love to play for. In actuality, it's more about being a team coordinator, organizer, and communicator that makes a great youth sports coach.

The basic B-ball knowledge you need can be picked up with an hour of YouTube videos. No need to be Steve Kerr to coach a local rec league team. (youth basketball is too organized already -- we just need to let them play!)

My point is:

I'd much rather have a fun + fair + enthusiastic youth coach who has the kids' best interests at heart than a "X's and O's guy or gal" who will prioritize winning over enjoyment and development.

So, if you've been hesitating to coach because you don't think you're "smart enough" for the role, I advise you to give that negativity a rest. Anyone who truly CARES about the players can be a great coach. All the basketball development knowledge you need can be found with a quick YouTube Search, but none of it is required to coach a bunch of happy kids.

If you are interested in helping out this season let me know because we are expecting a large turn out and we need you!

With a heavy heart I write; Bob Dorr ran our league as Director for 10 years and no one has ever worked harder for our kids. Sadly, Bob lost his fight with Cancer yesterday and with his passing our community has lost a great man.

I was fortunate to serve as assistant director under him for 3 seasons. It was there I saw firsthand how much effort he put in to not only basketball, but football and cheer as well. His years of dedicated volunteer service helped grow and mold our league to what you see today.

His "no BS", sometimes stoic, persona made many think he was callused, but if you knew Bob like I did, you knew the kind of man he really was; a hard working family man with a heart of gold. A man who dedicated his life to working with kids both here at WCAA, and as a coach at Cypress Creek.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Vida and their family during these difficult times.

Thank you, Bob Dorr for all your years of dedicated service to our league and community. You will be missed.

Let the coach’s coach! Many parents feel that if you aren’t giving direction from the end lines your child might not be successful while they’re on the court. What many parents don’t realize is that it makes it difficult for a player to focus on their coach and often your “direction” contradicts what the team is trying to do collectively.

It’s great to work with your kids independently and coach them up on your own, but when it comes to games, leave it to the coaches on the court and let the players play with their team. Support them, cheer for them, celebrate with them but keep the in-game coaching comments to the coaches.

If anyone would like to volunteer to coach a team next season please reach out to me prior to the season. We are ALWAYS looking for volunteers.
